Posted by Annapaola Prestia Laboratory of Epidemiology Neuroimaging and Telemedicine, IRCCS Centro San Giovanni di Dio FBF, The National Centre for Research and Care of Alzheimer’s and Mental Diseases, Brescia, Italy (April 19th 2010)

The purpose of this study was to use FDG-PET to investigate gender related differences in metabolic activity. One hundred twenty-six healthy right-handed subjects between twenty to seventy years old (64 males and 62 females) were examined. Was used a data-extraction technique, the three-dimensional stereotactic surface projections (3D-SSP) method, to measure metabolic changes. Gender differences in relative metabolic values (right+left) were found in the temporal and parahippocampal regions, in the thalamus, in the primary sensorimotor, parietal, temporal, medial frontal, putamen. This study demonstrated gender-related differences in glucose metabolism in healthy subjects.
